Boseong Green Tea Fields – a travel guide

Last Updated on September 25, 2024 by Alex

When I knew we would move to Seoul, I started looking for the best things to do and see around South Korea. Of course, visiting the Boseong green tea fields popped up fast.

I have always been passionate about tea, and after visiting Sri Lanka, I knew how charming tea fields can be. Moreover, as soon as we moved to Hong Kong, I attended an introduction to tea ceremony. Thus, I also wanted to experience tea in South Korea.

First, the Boseong tea fields are the most popular and largest in the peninsula. Secondly, getting there from Seoul or Busan is not too complicated, especially if you drive.

In conclusion, I started researching and planned our weekend escape to Yeosu and Boseong.

Our experience Visiting the Boseong Green Tea Fields

Boseong Green Tea Fields

Even though finding the main tea fields in Boseong was a bit challenging, once we did, we loved our time there.

Although the park is not as big as the fields in Sri Lanka, it is enough to fill a few hours.

It took us some time (and getting lost) to finally get to the fields; we were famished when we arrived. Thus, we first stopped for lunch at the restaurant by the field’s entrance – 마싯골 칼국수•수제비 (보성점).

We cannot recommend it more if you want an authentic treat. All dishes are created with a twist, and they incorporate tea into some of the most famous Korean food. We had Naengmyeon (cold noodle soup) with green tea, and it was delicious.

Next, we paid for the ticket and walked on the alley flanked by tall trees. In less than 10 minutes, we started to see the famous green tea fields.

Boseong Tea PLantations

Come prepared for an easy hike because you must get to the top for the best view.

We enjoyed our walk, stopping to take pictures along the way, following the signs, and relaxing in this oasis of tranquility.

You will want to get to the famous platform. There, you will find a perfect spot for pictures. Follow the signs to find it easily.

After our walk, we stopped at the garden cafe for green tea, ice cream, and an iced latte. Everything was delicious, and you cannot beat the setting between the tea bushes.

Next to the cafe is a store where you can buy locally-produced green tea. It is the best souvenir you can bring home from South Korea.

The bamboo forest

Just before we left, we discovered a hidden bamboo forest.

Turn right before the exit, walk for a few minutes, and there it is. It was the first time we saw a real bamboo forest, and we were impressed. Nobody was around, so we could have it all to ourselves.

Where are the Boseong Green Tea Fields?

We had a bit of a challenge in finding the fields, but here are the best directions. I somehow saved the Boseong Green Tea Resort, and we went there first. However, there are no tea plantations in that part.

In Naver Maps, look for 대한다원 보성녹차밭 (Boseong Green Tea Field Daehan Dawon). In front of the entrance, you will find a large car park.

How to get there

I’m sure you are wondering about transportation options to Boseong from major cities like Seoul or Busan.

Firstly, let me tell you how we got to the tea fields after traveling from Seoul.

Even though we had a car, we only had a long weekend, so we chose to fly from Seoul to Yeosu. From there, we rented a car and drove to the tea fields in Boseong.

We rented a car on a local provider’s website, but we strongly advise against that if you don’t speak Korean. Even finding the car at the airport was an adventure. Luckily, we had local friends to help us and call the car rental company several times.

Thus, we recommend you rent a car on Discover Cars. At the time we were there, they did not cover South Korea, but they do now. The site is a global aggregator that is available in many languages. Moreover, they have some of the best prices, helping you save up to 70%. Get the best price here!

On the other hand, you can book an organized tour leaving from Gwangju or a day trip to Boseong from Busan.

What other attractions are there?

The Boseong Green Tea Field Daehan Dawon only has tea fields, a store, a restaurant, a cafe, and a bamboo forest.

However, a few minutes away, you can visit the Korean Tea Culture Park, a Botanical Garden (세계차나무식물관), and the Boseong Korean Tea Museum.

The museum organizes tea ceremonies and tea-making experiences. If any of those interests you, check out their website and book your experience in advance.

Since we were traveling during the pandemic, these were unfortunately not available.

What should I wear and bring?

The fields are well-maintained, so you should not worry about having something in particular. However, I always make sure to have sunscreen and a hat.

When is the best time to visit the Boseong Green Tea Fields?

We visited at the end of July, and the fields were beautiful and green. However, you should not worry or plan your trip around this because the tea fields are green year-round.

Are there any accommodation options nearby?

Even though the tea fields are relatively remote, a few accommodation options are close enough.

The Nokcha Resort is steps away from the Tea Museum and a short walk from the tea fields.

수진한옥팬션 (boseong sujinhanog pensyeon) is another great option, especially if you want to stay in a traditional house.

In conclusion, if you want to see some green tea fields in Asia, you should get to Boseong.
